A word or two from our mapper/course setter, Greg Bacon.

Just a few details on todays event.

A big thanks to everyone that turned up in very trying and miserable conditions. This was a new map for our park series and I would like to thank Russell Rigby for setting up and fine tuning the map for me. There is still a little work to do especially with the continual changes depending on the regeneration and mowing around the area.

I must apologise to a handfull of short course competitors that picked up the control description sheet with one wrong number. I had changed the control stand as it was faulty but left the old number on some of the description sheets.

I also managed to give Peter Newton the wrong map at the start. Peter came back after a short run as his control descriptions did not match the map. Peter recovered well to finish  at the top of the short course.

Most competitors seemed to enjoy running around in the wet and hopefully the course was challenging for everyone!

Special thanks to Kerry Bacon, Tim and Andrea Hackney for helping with the entries and the start/finish. It was very demanding in the conditions, thanks again!

Thanks to Mick Kavour for helping us set up and on control pick up: Tim Hackney, Glenn Burgess, Steve and Geoff Todkill and Greig and Diana Scott. Also thanks to the old guy that started collecting controls for us before the event had finished, luckily the last runners had been through the area.

Not going to Clandulla this weekend?

Well you should be as it will be 2 fun days of orienteering, but if not maybe you can assist Dave Meyer and the AROC team closer to home at Fingal Bay. Here's what he has to say..........

AROC is searching for volunteers to help us at Fingal Bay on March 13th (this Saturday). Its easy, fun volunteering and you get a $70 voucher for any of our races, a shirt, visor, drink bottle, lunch back at HQ, snacks and the all important morning coffee! I know that this weekend is the opening State League round but if you're not trekking to Clandulla, come join us in Fingal Bay!

Email Dave Meyer ..... dave @ arocsport.com.au

Thank you and Cheers! Dave

From Andrew Haigh (series co-ordinator)

Dennis Lyons predictably set a great course for the final event of the inaugural series.

A new map with a good track system and no real hills made a great event. The wet weather of the week before, was all but forgotton except for a few muddy spots.

Newcomer Matthew Parson won the mens division on the day whilst Nicole Haigh won her first of the season.

The overall BOSS Champion of the Season could only be declared after a few minutes with the calculator. But Eventually it was clear that Malcolm Roberts had taken out first spot by a narrow margin over runner up Steve Todkill and in third place Damian Welboune. Rather than performing a lap of honour in front of the cheering crowds, Malcolm appeared somewhat embarassed with his victory. It is not him who should be embarrased but the rest of us for letting somebody on the wrong side of 50 beat us all.

The womens Champion of the Season caused less drama with the top two competitors not attending. So congratulations go to Mary Fien, closely followed by Mel Simpson in second and Nicole Haigh in third.

My unlikley assault on the Championship was shattered 2 minutes in to the event with a flat tyre. I returned to the start hoping for a quick fix, but as I pulled my spare tube from the car it snagged on a sharp part of my camping chair and ripped open!. After a slow repair job I decided to restart the clock and do the course non competitively.

131 people attended 1 or more BOSS events, 21 people attended all of them. Very impressive for our first season. I hope everybody enjoyed the series, any comments good or bad please let me know. We are already working on the dates for next season, starting in late October 2010.

Park2 was contested on the brilliant new map of the Hunter River High school and surrounds at Heatherbrae. Have we wasted a good area on a club park event? This is the question I asked myself while I was running around this excellent new map during the event. It's so good that perhaps we should have saved it for a state sprint event! Maybe next year.

Russell our setter is kicking himself for getting the maths wrong thus ensuring we got a little bit more exercise than we anticipated, but really at this stage of the season we should be used to it.

Here are a few words from the man himself.

‘BRICKBATS and BOUQUETS’

- PARK SERIES 2 at HUNTER RIVER HIGH SCHOOL

A bouquet to Russell Rigby for his wonderful mapping of a very enjoyable area -  touch of urban sprint in the buildings, some hard slog in areas of agriculture and some street running for those with the ‘post Summer Series blues’.

Bouquets to Graham Eather, Principal HRHS, who was all for the event from the outset. Also a bouquet to Matthew Hargreaves, Head Teacher Science/Agriculture, who so willingly accommodated every request. And a bouquet to HRHS Farm Assistant Tony Ziemba, who drove his own tractor and mulching equipment to the school, from out towards Seaham, just so we had a minor track network in the back paddock.

Bouquets to my HRHS work colleagues who allowed access to their properties for some slightly more challenging control placements in the street section of the courses. I speak of Dale Kennewell #5, Susan Battle #10 and Ian Battle #24. They are all related you know, and they are all very happy with the conduct of competitors during the event.

Bouquets (this is getting expensive) to the wonderful helpers:

Set up - Mick Kavur, Toni and Sally-Anne Henderson, Karen and Nicola Blatchford

Registration - Toni Henderson

Start - Sally-Anne Henderson, Karen and Nicola Blatchford

Finish - Karen (again), Peter Orr, Damien Enderby, Kerry Bacon and Carolyn Rigby

Control Collection - Adam Trace, Arthur Kingsland, Greg and Kerry Bacon

Brickbat (it had to come) to the idiot of a course setter that got the course lengths all wrong. He now knows what happened, but there are no excuses. My sincere apologies to all competitors. Thank goodness many of you had some quality running in your legs from the recently completed Summer Street Series.

And finally, a bouquet to all who competed. You were still able to be generous with your feedback on the map, and the courses. The mapping observations were well deserved. Not so sure about the courses given the inappropriate length, but I really did appreciate your positive and understanding demeanour around the finish desk and results board as you recovered from your epic Heatherbrae adventure.
