Results: BOSS4 - Stanford Merthyr
Tuesday, 17 January 2012
I was very excited to set my first course. I was aware that the area is quite flat and fully expected the top riders to clear the field so I set myself the challenge of working against this. The strategy involved control placement along tracks making an “obvious lap” difficult or impossible; and point layout with the highest points available close to the start/finish. The idea behind this was to force the faster riders to take risks in chasing the final few points on the outer edges - and making time management more critical by making it impossible to just leave out some controls on the way back. I was also expecting this to result in the results being a lot closer amongst the various riders.
Overall I was very happy with the end result – not even Steve was able to clear the course and everyone had a good time and enjoyed the challenge of the layout.
A huge thanks to my mates (Andrew, Ruth, Wayne and Bec) and my wonderful wife Bron for helping me put the controls out on Saturday night. And to God for giving us good weather!
Thanks to Graeme, Tim, Dennis, Toy and Rudy for helping with control collection and Sam and Cheryle for running the desk(s) on the day.

SSS11 - Raymond Terrace
Monday, 9 January 2012
The unusually mild weather for our street series finally came to an end for the first event in the new year, 38 deg plus and thunderstorms was the order for the day. With 56 entries for the event it turned out to be a very easy paced event with competitors spread out with the start times and not too much pressure on the finish desk. With 65 points up for grabs there were plenty of controls to visit near the start as well as throughout the course. The map had been increased in size from the event three years ago where several competitors finished early. It was a very muggy day after the rain at start time and a few competitors were suffering from a lack of energy after the run. It also seemed to be a day where several competitors forgot their watches! Steve Todkill nearly collected all the points but without a watch he came in late and lost quite a few points. Arthur Kingsland also forgot his watch but managed to return with 5 seconds to spare, amazing! Alex Massey was the first male and Kim Van Netten the first female.
Thanks to everyone that participated in the event and thanks for the positive comments after the event.
Thanks to Cheryle Todkill and Joy Guy on the start and registration desk. Thanks to Tim Hackney and Kerry Bacon on the finish desk.

BOSS3 - Killingworth
Tuesday, 20 December 2011
From course planner Andrew Power
As this was my second consecutive year setting a BOSS event at Killingworth I set out to find control locations I and others hadn’t used recently. I went out for a few rides to explore and found some new tracks. Not long after I worked out my proposed course the first Duo event was moved to Killingworth and meant Greg was also looking for control locations. A discussion with Denis informed me that some of my new tracks were in the National Park and couldn’t be used. I’ll just start again. After the Duo I revised my course and went out and rode it the last weekend to check it was OK and long enough for the faster riders. I rode the whole course on Saturday to put out controls and check everything was OK. The rain earlier in the week must have been pretty heavy as I discovered a new “lake”, some tracks had been washed away and a couple of the bridges had been damaged; but after the underwater riding at Lone Pine Road who’d be worried about a couple of puddles. Sorry to those competitors who struggled to find controls 2C and 3F. I wanted to make them difficult to navigate to but the scale of the map, the placement of the circle and the detail behind the circle being hidden made it more difficult than I planned. I’ll look out for that next time. I hope everyone had fun, was challenged or at least got some exercise. SSS9 & Bush Presentations
Friday, 16 December 2011

Wednesday saw the latest event of the summer street series contested at the ficticious suburb of "ELKINDALE". The name is derived from the three suburbs covered by the map, Elermore Vale/Rankin Park/Glendale. Course planner Geoff Peel wanted to send contestants to parts of the map unvisited for a number of years yet not take in too many of the hills that dominate the area, thus the course was fairly linear and route choices not as numerous as past events. Alex Massey once again managed to top score but for the second week in a row was beaten on time. Last week it was Danile Orr in an inspiring "surprise" win (Daniel was probably more surprised that anybody) while this week Alex was eclipsed by long time club member and one time president Arthur Kingsland. Seems after many years of injuries Arthur seems to have his mojo back as this was the second time in the past month that he has beaten Massey. In the womens Kim van Netten had a reasonable buffer back to soon to be Autralian MTBO representative Carolyn Matthhews. Liam Gibson was best placed rookie in a creditable 17th position and also took out the handicap honours for the week.
After the event the Club's Bush presentations were held in the adjacent community hall. The Newcastle Orienteer of the year recipients for the third year in a row were Alex Massey & Jenny Enderby.
SetUp: Geoff Peel, Margaret Peel, Mick Kavar Start/Rego: Cheryle Todkill, Joy & Jeff Guy Finish: Margaret Peel, Graham Fowler, Bob Gilbert, Geoff Peel.

SSS8 - Metford
Friday, 9 December 2011
From Sally-Anne, Rhiana and Nicola Wednesday turned out to be a wet one. Still, a number of people still braved the conditions to come out and try it out. With many controls on each side of the highway, not many made it to the other side of the map, opting for the closer side and still achieving winning results. Turned out to be an enjoyable afternoon of orienteering for all, many thanks going out to all who helped. Cheryl Todkill on start, Russell Blatchford on finish and everyone else in between that assisted in set up and pack up. Start: Sally and Cheryl Todkill Finish: Nicola Blatchford, Rhiana Roberts and Russell Blatchford Setters: Nicola, Rhiana and Sally Helpers: Malcolm Roberts, Karen & Russell Blatchford, Mick Kavur, Stewart?? And thanks to anyone we've forgotten (:
Daniel Orr took top honours this week in a not quite come from nowhere win. Daniel while generally in the top ten or so competitors has not cracked it for a win this season and should be very happy with this run just eclipsing series pacesetter Alex Massey. Nicole Haigh's win places her at the top of the overall women's standings. Once again the weather appeared less than ideal but in actuality it never rained and the mild conditions were perfect for running. The area is mostly undulating with the course set by Sal/Nic/Rhiana offering plenty of points either side of the highway. The vast majority of contestants stuck to the Northern side with only a few being tempted into venturing over the bridge. Next week we shall be at Elermore Vale with the Bush Presentations and social night following immediately after in the adjacent hall. results | routegadget
